Heart-Healthy Foods

Heart health is a very important issue today. It can be easy to eat how you want without thinking about the vitamins and nutrients your body needs to stay in good condition. There are five heart-healthy foods that are easy to add to your regular diet. In fact, you can find them at JB Hook's on our appetizer, lunch, and dinner menus!

Salmon

Omega-3 fatty acids can help decrease arrhythmias, triglyceride levels, blood pressure, and the amount of plaque in your arteries. It is recommended that you have at least two servings of foods that contain a high level of omega-3 fatty acids every week. Salmon is one of the best foods to help you get your weekly allowance of Omega-3's. It is also relatively easy to prepare at home.

Red Wine

This delicious beverage contains antioxidants that have been shown to have heart-protecting benefits. Red wine also contains something called flavonoids, which can help keep your blood vessels healthy.

Tuna

Tuna is another fish that contains omega-3 fatty acids. It also contains a substance called niacin that may help increase the chance of someone's survival if they have a heart attack. White tuna is the type with the highest concentration of omega-3's, but it also has the highest content of mercury, which is not good for pregnant women.

Carrots

The nutrient beta-carotene can be found in carrots and has been associated with a lower risk of heart disease and stroke. Carrots are a very versatile vegetable. Eat them raw for an afternoon snack, bake them with a bit of oil for a delicious dinner side, or shred them and use them in baking recipes.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes are another food that contains beta- and alpha-carotene. They also contain a nutrient called lycopene that has been shown to protect from cardiovascular disease. Tomatoes are a great addition to salads, sandwiches, and wraps in their raw form. They are also just as delicious when cooked and added to sauces, soups, and more.
