History of Restaurants & Waitstaff 1787 | The French Revolution Before the French Revolution, food sales were strictly controlled by something called guilds. For example, you had to be a member of a specific guild in order to sell that particular kind of food. If you weren't, then your food sales were illegal. Crazy, right?
