Whiskey is a delicious, distilled alcoholic beverage that can be enjoyed in so many different ways - neat, on the rocks, with soda... Some people even use it in baking! Keep reading to learn more about the incredible drink that whiskey is and the many drinks we have on the JB Hook's menu.

How is Whiskey Made?

Whisky can be made from several different kinds of ingredients, including corn, wheat, rye, and barley. These grains are mashed and then fermented. The alcohol is then distilled in its country of origin. The first whiskey was distilled in Ireland. There are several different kinds of whisky and each has a different "proof" which indicates the amount of alcohol content. 100-proof means it has 50% alcohol.

Kinds of Whiskey

The most common kinds of whisky are American, Scotch, Irish, and Canadian. American whisky (like bourbon, rye, and Tennessee) is usually sweet. Scotch whiskey (Scotch) has an earthy flavor. Irish whisky is usually light-bodied with robust flavor. Canadian whiskey is also light-bodied, but has a fruity flavor.

A Couple Fun Facts About Whiskey

  • Doctors used to prescribe whisky for certain ailments. During the Prohibition, there was even a law that allowed these prescriptions to continue.

  • Ths most expensive whisky is Macallan "M". It contains six liters of whisky from Spanish oak sherry casks from the 40s and 90s. It was sold for 393,109 pounds. (Resource: https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/world-whisky-day/)

  • The oldest whiskey is over 150-years-old. It's a bottle of Glenavon Special Liqueur Whisky that may have been packaged between 1851 and 1858.

  • The word "whiskey" came from the phrase "uisce beatha" - an Irish/Gaelic phrase that means "water of life".
