The Origin of the Delicious Moscow Mule

There are many delicious cocktails available from the bar at our Lake of the Ozarks fine dining restaurant, and among these are a few different versions of the classic Moscow Mule. This popular drink has been around for quite a while, and we decided to look into its interesting history, and here is what we found out.

The American Mule?
Although most commonly known as the "Moscow" Mule, this tasty cocktail did not originate in Russia. As a matter of fact, it was created right here in the United States, and it most likely got its name due to Russia often being associated with its main ingredient - vodka.

John G. Martin of G.F. Heublien Brothers out of Hartford, Connecticut decided to buy the Smirnoff vodka company in 1939. Much to his despair, he soon found out that Americans were not terribly fond of vodka, making it an extremely difficult product to sell.

Martin got together with Jack Morgan, the owner of the Cock 'n' Bull Pub in Los Angeles, and discovered that Morgan also had a product that he was having trouble selling - their house brand of ginger beer. The two men decided to combine the vodka with the ginger beer, along with a squeeze of lemon juice, and all of a sudden they had a delicious new cocktail that started getting some much-needed attention.

That's a great story, and it might very well be the true one, but in 2007 a new version came to light. According to Morgan's head bartender, Wes Price, he invented the new drink while he was trying to find a way to get rid of stock from the pub's cellar that wasn't selling. Either way, the drink did originate at the Cock 'n' Bull Pub.

That Shiny Mug
Today, a Mule is most often served in a copper mug, and with a squeeze of lime juice rather than lemon. That copper mug is not out of necessity, but rather became a tradition after a publicity stunt by Martin. He traveled the country introducing this brand new cocktail to bartenders served in a copper mug.

Once he convinced them that their bar simply had to carry it, he would take 2 Polaroid pictures of someone from the bar holding a bottle of Smirnoff and a copper mug filled with a Moscow Mule. One was left at the business for them to advertise with, and the other he would take to the next bar to show off the fact that the competition was selling this popular new cocktail, so they should too!
