Memorial Weekend is finally upon us. Even though we have had some beautiful days already this spring, this holiday marks the official start of the vacation season. We are expecting to see a lot of visitors, both local and from far away, at our lake view restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks. Once you get arrive, here is what you can expect.

Fireworks

The 14-mile panoramic view from JB Hook's allows viewing of many local fireworks displays over the holiday weekend. You can see the view from every seat in the restaurant. An uninterrupted view of the gorgeous lake area can be enjoyed from the main dining room, our special event room, the bar, and the outdoor patio.

At dusk, we will turn the lights down to make the displays even more enjoyable. For a list of the different fireworks shows that are happening this Memorial Day weekend at the Lake, visit Funlake.com.

Facts

Just in case you need some interesting dinner conversation over the holiday, we looked up some Memorial Day facts that you may not already be aware of.

  • Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day. It began after the Civil War when soldiers honored their fallen comrades by decorating their graves with flags, flowers, and wreaths. The name was officially changed to Memorial Day in 1967.
  • This holiday started out being celebrated every May 30. After the Uniform Monday Holiday Act was signed in 1971, it was moved to the last Sunday in May. This year we actually get to celebrate on the original date!
  • American Flags are flown at half-staff until noon on Memorial Day, but after that they are raised briskly to full-staff.
  • Red Poppies are sold by the VFW on Memorial Weekend as a symbol of remembrance for fallen soldiers. This tradition was inspired by the poem "In Flanders Fields" by Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae in 1915 during World War I. It is about the poppies that grow over soldiers' graves.
  • The National Moment of Remembrance Act was signed in 2000. It states that at 3 pm local time, Americans must pause and use that moment to remember the brave men and women that died serving our country.

However you choose to spend your 3-day weekend, we hope that you spend some of it here at our Lake of the Ozarks seafood and steak restaurant. The lake area is a wonderful place to vacation, and it's even better when you enjoy the good food and fun times that happen right here at JB Hook's.

Our Seafood - Delicious AND It's Good For You

It is recommended that you eat seafood twice a week. That's not advice from us, but trusted healthcare professionals. Personally, here at JB Hook's we want to eat seafood every day of the week, but we've got lots of delicious menu items for those other days of the week too.

Our restaurant has become known for having the best seafood at the Lake of the Ozarks. The talented chefs know how to make it taste amazing, but did you realize that seafood also has many health benefits?

Most seafood is packed with omega-3 fatty acids, which are extremely heart healthy, can reduce blood pressure and depression, and may reduce tissue inflammation to alleviate the symptoms of arthritis.

Scallops are a great source of B vitamins, magnesium, and potassium. Lobsters also contain B vitamins, plus iodine and selenium, and it's low in calories. (If you go light on the butter!) Mahi is a source of complete protein, meaning it has all of the essential amino acids you need to survive.

JB Hook's offers a lot of different seafood, in many different ways. Our Shrimp and Oyster Bar is filled with popular menu items you can order any time. Today we have decided to share the ocean and freshwater fish dishes that we have available for dinner.

Crawl for the Roses Kentucky Derby Party - May 7

The 1st Annual Crawl for the Roses at the Lake of the Ozarks is taking place this Saturday, May 7, 2016 from 3 pm - 6 pm. JB Hook's is thrilled to be a part of this spectacular event in honor of the Kentucky Derby.

Our lake view bar at the Lake of the Ozarks will the the center of all the action during the "most exciting two minutes in sports." That is one title the Kentucky Derby has been given.  Another is the "Run for the Roses" because the winning thoroughbred is adorned with a blanket of red roses. We are one of the stops along this "Crawl for the Roses" that you can participate in, which is sponsored by Four Roses Kentucky Bourbon.

America's greatest race takes place at the world's most legendary racetrack, Churchill Downs, and has been happening since 1875. 3-year-old thoroughbred horses race 1.25 miles around a dirt track. A crowd of around 155,000 attends the races in person each year.

Since Louisville, Kentucky is a bit of a trip from this area, you can watch the race with us from the many televisions in the JB Hook's bar. We plan to incorporate a few Kentucky Derby traditions into our celebration to make you feel like you're really there.

The Hats
One of these traditions will be the fabulous and extravagant hats and bonnets that race-watchers are expected to wear. The bigger and louder the hat, the better! You will see them in every style, from glamorous and pricey to humorous and fun. Over time, these hats have come to be seen as a symbol of good luck at the race. If you happen to have the best derby hat at JB Hook's this weekend, you will be lucky enough to take home a $50 gift certificate. Better start planning your look now!

The Roses

The red rose is the official flower of this famous thoroughbred race because of the blanket of roses that is presented to the winning horse. The rose garland made its first appearance in 1896, but at that time it was an arrangement of white and pink roses. The red rose didn't become the official flower until 1904. Bill Corum, a New York sports columnist, gave the race the nickname "Run for the Roses" in 1925. At our party, we will be offering roses to the ladies for as long as our supply lasts.

The Bourbon

The traditional beverage of Churchill Downs has been the Mint Julep for over 100 years. The main ingredient in this refreshing cocktail is good old Kentucky Bourbon. Our event is sponsored by Four Roses Bourbon out of Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. Four Roses was given the title of American Whisky Distiller of the Year in 2011, 2012, 2013, & 2015 by Whisky Magazine.

This particular brand of Bourbon has a long, colorful history. It was one of only six distilleries during Prohibition that was legally licensed to distill Bourbon, for "medicinal purposes only" of course. It has been around since 1888, and this award-winning drink has withstood the test of time. You can give it a try this weekend.

Join us this Saturday for all of the fun and excitement. It's always a party when we gather at our steak and seafood restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks, and this Kentucky Derby viewing event is sure to make it even more special. If you simply can't wait until Saturday, come on in for Happy Hour at JB Hook's on Friday from 3-8 pm and catch some of the early race coverage and get a taste of our Four Roses Bourbon before everyone else.
