The Great Bagnell Dam Duck Drop - Family Fun for a Great Cause

We are lucky enough to live in an area that not only hosts the most fun and exciting events at the Lake of the Ozarks, but many of them are also thrown to benefit very worthy causes. The Great Bagnell Dam Duck Drop is one of those events, and it takes place right up the road from JB Hook's

There is something fun for the entire family to enjoy at the Great Bagnell Dam Duck Drop. There is a golf tournament on Friday, and Saturday includes a family fun zone and the unbelievable sight of thousands of rubber duckies being dropped into the Osage River below Bagnell Dam. All of the funds raised remain in the area and are distributed among a long list of local non-profit organizations through the Ozark Coast Kiwanis Organization.

There will be hole-in-one contests for both cash and a new boat, a putting contest for a chance to win $5,000, and more!

You can sign up for the Duck Drop golf tournament online as a team or individually. The cost is $125 per player and includes lunch, the tournament, and 10 Duck Drop tickets. All proceeds will benefit the Lake Area Big Brothers Big Sisters and Ozark Kiwanis, which both help local children in the lake area. Lunch and registration are at noon, and the shotgun start kicks off at 1:30 pm.

The Family Fun Zone & Duck Drop

Saturday, August 6 is Duck Drop Day! It will open with a family fun zone from 10:00 am - 1:00 pm. This will include many entertaining activities and games that are free to enjoy. It all takes place at the Dam Bait & Campground below Bagnell Dam. Some of the fun that you can look forward to is:

The Surprising History of the Caesar Salad

The Caesar salad is an item that you expect to see on the menu at any fine dining restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks. Both as a side or as a main dish, this delicious salad is a popular item at JB Hook's.

JB Hook's, Lake of the Ozarks

You have most likely ordered it quite a few times over the years, but probably haven't thought much about where this tasty creation originated. Well, you may be surprised to find out that the most popular origin story states that the recipe originated in Mexico.

An Italian immigrant named Caesar Cardini came to America with his brother Alex after World War I. They lived in San Diego, California, but operated a restaurant in the early 1920's in Tijuana to avoid the restrictions brought about by prohibition.

According to Caesar's daughter, Rosa, her father invented this dish for a busy Fourth of July crowd after they began running out of supplies in the kitchen. As with many classic culinary dishes, something delicious came out of using the odds and ends that were left over. To make this thrown-together dish seem a little more special, he added the dramatic flair of having the chef toss the salad table-side for guests.

Disputed Origin

Of course, there are other people who claim to be the original inventor. Various staff members from Caesar's kitchen say that they came up with the recipe while working there. Even his brother, Alex, made the claim that he developed this dish, but he named it "Aviator Salad" in honor of the pilot's he flew with in the war.

Regardless of who actually put the ingredients together first, as it became a very popular food, patrons would say something like, "Let's go to Caesar's and get that salad." The title of "Caesar Salad" is an easy transition from that phrase.

The famous Julia Child fondly remembered visiting Caesar's restaurant with her parents. Both the flavor and the table-side presentation made quite an impression on her.

Over the years, the recipe has changed slightly. It always contains romaine lettuce, croutons, and Parmesan cheese. The dressing is made up of a variety of ingredients that every chef likes to play with a bit.

Award-Winning Hot Summer Nights on the Bagnell Dam Strip

Hot Summer Nights, Bagnell Dam Strip, Lake of the OzarksThe award-winning Hot Summer Nights on the historic Bagnell Dam Strip take place on the second Friday of every month, all summer long, right up the road from our Lake of the Ozarks seafood restaurant. There are three more of these incredible events happening this year, including one big 50th anniversary celebration.

Start Your Night With Us

JB Hook's is the perfect place to stop before all of the fun on the strip gets started. Visit us for our Friday Happy Hour from 3-7 pm, which includes the talented Mike V. and friends performing, then head on up the street for a blast into the past.

The excitement on the strip begins at 6 pm and generally wraps up around 11 pm. There are activities for the entire family to enjoy, like face painting and magicians, and it's absolutely free to attend. All makes, models, and years of every car, truck, and motorcycle are invited to line up along the strip and show itself off.

You will also experience music and entertainment, shopping, giveaways, kids' activities, and a whole lot more, come rain or come shine. Here is some detailed information about the three remaining Hot Summer Nights for 2016.

July 8: Rats, Rods, and Street Machines

This theme is for anyone that loves to go fast. This month people are encouraged to show off their "souped up" Hot Rods that have been modified for maximum speed. A Rat Rod is very similar, but appears to be unfinished on the outside. Street Machines simply take the entire process up another notch. If you can pull yourself away from the cool cars lined up along the strip, there will be plenty of exciting things happening all around to take part in.

August 12: Since '66 - 50 Years of Cruising The Strip

The 1960's were an intriguing decade, filled with many memorable events. It was during this era that Lake Ozark became a fourth-class city. This month will celebrate 50 years of being able to cruise up and down the historic Bagnell Dam Strip.

There will be all of your favorite 1960's music blasting over the speakers near Luby's stage, as well as some nostalgic entertainment to enjoy. As an extra-special bonus, many of the businesses along the strip will be offering 1960's prices on items throughout the weekend.

September 9: Vettes for Veterans

A giant American flag will greet everyone at the entrance of the strip this evening. It has become tradition for the final Hot Summer Nights of the season to salute the veterans and many military men and women in the area.

In addition to the regular fun, the Lake of the Ozarks Corvette Club will parade from Woods Supermarket to the dam and back, each carrying a veteran with them. The Fort Leonard Wood Color Guard will lead the parade, and mini American flags will be passed out to the crowd to wave as everyone passes by.

The Eldon VFW Post 2442 will give a 21-gun salute and play "TAPS." The Lake of the Ozarks Air Show takes place on Saturday, September 9, and they will make an early appearance at this event with a fly-over from KC Flight.
