The March of Dimes is an organization that  is dedicated to healthy pregnancies and to giving every baby a healthy start.  It focuses on preventing birth defects and infant mortality.  One main problem area that they target is premature births.  November is Prematurity Awareness Month, and these Signature Chefs Auctions are taking place nationwide to go along with that.  500,000 babies are born too soon each year, …

Fall Fun Around the Lake of the Ozarks

Fall is here, and Halloween is just around the corner.  Your favorite seafood restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks is conveniently located near lots of fun activities celebrating both of those.  Below you will find a list of family-friendly things to do in the coming days that are close to home. 




Pumpkin Patch at Hy-Vee Hallow in Osage Beach

Located in the parking lot in front of Hy-Vee, you will find a great family-fun area.  It features a straw bale maze, old fashioned water pump duck races, a corn pit, seesaws, and a hay mountain.  It's a wonderful photo opportunity for catching the kids having all kinds of Fall fun.  You can also purchase your pumpkins, large squash, and mums while you are there.  

Mecca Farms in Roach

Every Saturday and Sunday in October you can spend the day on this lovely farm.  They are open from 10 am - 5 pm.  You will enjoy hayrides, a petting zoo, a corn crib, face painting, a small corn maze, a big slide, concessions, and a pick-your-own pumpkin patch.

10 Interesting Facts About Shrimp

In honor of October being National Seafood Month, today we searched and found some interesting facts about shrimp.  The best seafood restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks knows how to serve up the most delicious shrimp dishes once they are caught, but here are a few fun facts about these small crustaceans before they get to us.   



1. Shrimp are all born male, then mature into females.

2. They go through 16 different stages of life, from egg to adult. 

3. The longest shrimp on record was 16 inches long. 

4. There are well over 128 species of shrimp.

5. A mantis shrimp has claws that can break aquarium glass with one incredibly fast and powerful swing.


6. The pistol shrimp's attack is hotter than the surface of the sun and so terribly loud that it can rupture a human ear drum.

7. Without fins, shrimp don't actually swim, but when they do move, they can only go backward.

8. The correct term for raw or uncooked shrimp is "green."

We love October because it is a month dedicated to one of our very favorite things - SEAFOOD!  October is listed as National Seafood Month, and what better place to celebrate than the best seafood restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks!  With many varieties to choose from, JB Hook's is the perfect spot to enjoy an old favorite or discover a new ocean or freshwater fish dish. 

A lot of health benefits come with eating seafood.  It is rich in nutrients, plus a wonderful source of protein, vitamins, and minerals.  Another great thing is that it provides healthy omega-3 fatty acids, and is very low in omega-6 fatty acids, or "bad fats," that are found in red meat.  Studies have even been done that allow seafood to be categorized as "brain food."
