Fun Facts About 4th of July

Just in case you need some interesting dinner conversation over the holiday weekend, we looked up some fun facts about the Fourth of July that you may not be aware of.

- Fourth of July is the biggest hot dog holiday of the year, with Americans consuming about 155 million hot dogs on Independence Day alone, according to TIME magazine.

- Due to concerns about the Liberty Bell cracking, it hasn't been rung since 1846. Instead, every year, the 2,000-pound bell is tapped 13 times to signal bells across the country to starting ringing to mark the Fourth of July.

- Only two Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The majority of them signed it on August 2, 1776. Fourth of July doesn't celebrate the signing of the Declaration. Instead, it celebrates the adoption it by the Second Continental Congress.

- While Fourth of July has been celebrated since 1777, it wasn't declared a federal holiday until 1870.

- In the now-famous letter that was dated July 3, 1776, John Adams writes to his wife, Abigail, that the "Second Day of July" would be celebrated as American Independence Day, since Congress had actually voted to cut ties with Great Britain the day before.
