Learn These Wine Pairing Basics

JB Hook's is the number one restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks with an extensive wine list and delicious menu options. While all of our food and wines are delicious, pairing the right wine with your meal can make all the difference in how much you enjoy your meal. If you choose a wine that doesn't pair well with your meal, the tannins could interact with your food and give you an overall sour or bitter taste. Today, we're just dipping our toes into the basics wine pairings. Keep reading to find out what wine to order with your next dish at JB Hook's!

Dry White

Sauvignon Blanc

Pinot Grigio

Dry white wines tend to go best with fresh and roasted vegetables, starches, and fish. Order a dry white with JB Hook's Alaskan King Crab Legs, one and a half pounds of boiled Alaskan King Crab, served with drawn butter. Complete your meal with a fresh side salad and mashed or baked potatoes as a side.

Sweet White

Moscato

Riesling

Soft and hard cheeses, cured meats, and sweets go best with sweet whites like a Moscato or Riesling. Pair this wine with one of our deliciously cheesy happy hour appetizers or a dessert!

Rich White

Chardonnay

Rich white wine pairs perfectly with soft cheeses, starches, light and rich seafood, and white meat. JB Hook's has the perfect meal to pair with your chardonnay... The Stuffed Chicken Chardonnay. This dish is delicious chicken (white meat), stuffed with cream cheese (soft cheese) and crabmeat (seafood), then breaded, flash fried, and baked to a golden brown and topped with Chardonnay cream sauce.

Sparkling

Champagne

Prosecco

Soft cheese, hard cheese, vegetables, starches, and seafood go great with sparkling wines. Try pairing our Tuscan Scallop Pasta with one of our sparkling wines. This pasta dish is made with dayboat scallops (seafood) that are pan-seared with asparagus, peppers, tomatoes, and mushrooms (vegetables) in a pesto-cream sauce. Served over capellini pasta (starch). Delicious!

Light Red

Pinot Noir

Pair a light red with roasted vegetables, rich fish, white meat, or cured meat. If you go the rich fish route, try our Hook's Stuffed Lobster Tail for dinner. This dish is our signature one-pound Canadian Lobster tail stuffed with Alaskan King Crab, fresh herbs, and panko breadcrumbs. It's oven broiled and served with pan seared dayboat scallops and gulf shrimp in a classic scampi sauce.

Medium Red

Zinfandel

Merlot

Order a medium red wine with roasted vegetables, hard cheese, starches, white meat, red meat, cured meat. Enjoy with JB Hook's Osso Bucco... Made with pork shank that's slow-roasted, served over buttery garlic mashed potatoes, finished with sautéed mushrooms and a wine reduction.

Bold Red

Cabernet Sauvignon

Malbec

Syrah

A bold red wine is the perfect pairing for hard cheeses, starches, red meat, and cured meat. Order a bold red with our legendary 1881 Omaha Hereford Beef Filet Mignon, charbroiled and finished with Maitre d' Butter.

Dessert

Sherry

Port

This kind of wine speaks for itself! Dessert wines can be easily paired with sweets and also soft cheeses, starches, and cured meats.
