History of Whisk(e)y Day
The first International Whisk(e)y Day was in 2009 in the northern Netherlands as part of the Whiskey Day Festival. March 27th was selected as the date because it is the birthday of a famous author who wrote several books about both whisky and beer. If you're wondering what the purpose of the "e" in parentheses is, it's to support countries that spell the famous beverage "whiskey" instead of "whisky". These countries include Scotland, Canada, and Japan. Ireland and the United States of America spell it without an "e".
How is Whisky Made?
Whisky can be made from several different kinds of ingredients, including corn, wheat, rye, and barley. These grains are mashed and then fermented. The alcohol is then distilled in its country of origin. The first whiskey was distilled in Ireland. In fact, "whiskey" came from "uisce beatha" - an Irish phrase that means "water of life". There are several different kinds of whisky and each has a different "proof" which indicates the amount of alcohol content. 100-proof means it has 50% alcohol.
The most common kinds of whisky are American, Scotch, Irish, and Canadian. American whisky (like bourbon, rye, and Tennessee) is usually sweet. Scotch whiskey (Scotch) has an earthy flavor. Irish whisky is usually light-bodied with robust flavor. Canadian whiskey is also light-bodied, but has a fruity flavor.
